I’ve been browsing my RSS feeds for fan reactions to The Return of Jezebel James. Lots of non-fans hated the show—because they hated the actresses, or they hated the laugh track, or they hated the writing. What it boiled down to, I think, is that non-fans just don’t get it, which makes sense, because they’re non-fans. One woman was even majorly offended that Sarah is infertile, because infertility is not funny, and therefore it’s an inappropriate subject for a comedy—just as it was inappropriate for Hawkeye to make jokes about bombs blowing up people, or for Roseanne to make fun of poor, dysfunctional families. (Uh, that last part was my commentary, not hers.)
But there are so far a number of fans who enjoyed the premier and said so. Here’s the first batch of links to bloggers who had interesting things to say about the premier of The Return of Jezebel James.
- Emily Pohl-Weary writes a wonderfully passionate review, which sums up, “Unfortunately, rumors indicate that Fox has already fallen out of love with the show and may cancel it… Sad, sad. So sad.”
- Nancy Hesch tells her story and writes, “The show is so funny and I can totally see the same kind of humor from the Gilmore Girls. If you liked Gilmore Girls as much as I did, you for sure need to check this show out.”
- LaurieGlory, the Listographer, posts 6 Requisite Gilmore Girls Shout-outs in The Return of Jezebel James.
- Riley at Drawing on Walls, said the second episode “had a lot of things that made Gilmore Girls a great show.” And summed up, “Watch it… while you can.”
- The blogger at Furious Nads says, “I’m too busy watching Parker Posey, who I went to college with, being awesome.”
- At The Reading Zone, an anonymous blogger says, “Imagine my surprise when I realize that the main character is a children’s book editor!” And then she proceeds to try to guess which publisher Sarah works for. (Hee hee.) She sums up, “And hey, it’s not a bad show, either! I’ve been laughing a little. And there are some nods to children’s lit!!!”
- Fudderduds—I assume that’s a nickname—on his Insomnia for Dummies blog, says, “The show is smart, funny, and just a little silly.”
- Lastly, the blogger at Creative & Sons thought Sarah and Coco’s little discussion about decorating her room sums up nicely what they do.
I plan to post more links to fan reactions, as more reactions show up in the blogosphere.
